2005 Tour

A couple of late withdrawals meant that we were leaving for tour with typically low numbers - why this is is beyond me, but it needs sorting.

The first day this year was a golf day played at Peterstone Lakes GC. We picked up Wildthing from the city center, as he had been there since Monday, and made our way to the Golf Club without too many diversions to meet up with Tibbsy.

The golf went something like this - 3 1/2 hours, 2347 lost balls, 1 phone lost, 1 phone found. The highlight of the afternoon being waiting around an hour or so after the round asking every group if they had Thorpey's mobile before finding out that the muppet who had found it had taken it home with him, this meant a detour to a local housing estate on the way back to town to collect his the phone. This after the fact that 5 minutes after Thorpey lost the phone we knew exactly where it was but he decided not to walk back down a fairway to collect it!!

Wednesday night took on a familiar look - Reflex for beer, Flares for beer and Screamers and Caroline Street for mixed rodent kebab and uncooked chips.

Thursday saw the arrival of a few expected tourists and a couple of bonus tourists in Jethro and Neil Forrest. Thorpey was captain for the day and wisely decided to bat as most of the team was still in the pub. Even though Elliott played one of his longest innings of the season, being out in the second over, there was a frantic padding up and ringing the pub session. Blackwood fielded a side with only one player over 18 and with the threat of rain Thorpey declared after 31 overs with the score around 180. Blackwood did not let their youngsters off and even though it was a 40 over game their umpire informed them they were only batting 31 overs themselves. We let the oppo off with some indifferent bowling first up and we soon found ourselves in trouble with the scoreboard ticking over too quickly. We did our best to reign in the Blackwood chase but in the end they sneaked home by 1 wicket with 1 ball remaining.

Thursday night - you got it - Reflex, but for some unknown reason we actually went somewhere else after. We went to an old tour haunt The Philharmonic and it will certainly be on my agenda next tour, although it was still too youthful and vibrant for half the tourists who trundled back up the road to Flares.

The game on Friday was definitely a case of the day after the nights before and even though we restricted Whitchurch to 131 in their 35 overs we came up 15 runs short at the end of the game.

I actually returned home on the Friday evening, but I am reliably informed that the guys who stayed spent the bulk of the night in Flares - surprise, surprise!

All in all another enjoyable tour - but could have been so much better if 5 or 6 other club members had toured.

It was great to see Andy Benning and Neil Forrest playing for Sonning again, hopefully we will see them turn out regularly next season.

Thanks again to the Clubs that hosted us and to Tibbsy for playing for us for the 3rd year running (Ali, I have warned him he will not be able to play next year unless he pays his club subs).

Cheers
