Tour 2007

This year's Tour took on the normal shape but did (almost) include a game against a new club.

The Wednesday was a golf day spent again this year at Celtic Manor but on the new Montgomerie Course. All in all a good day with a few quiet sherbets in the evening.

Thursday we were due to play Miskin. The weather ultimately meant the game was never to be played but an accident on the M4 meant that even if it had been blue skies we would have started late with Ali navigating the convoy to avoid the pile up and taking the scenic route via Llanfairpwllgwyngyllgogerychwyrndrobwllllantysiliogogogoch. The detour might not have been so severe if Ali had concentrated on the map rather than constantly ringing the oppo skipper to say that the game must go ahead, and anyway the rain wouldn't last as all the great crested swamp tits he had seen on the way down were standing on their right legs - obvious really.

Unfortunately they were lesser great crested swamp tits, which explained the consistent hard rain and the river flowing through Miskin high street. Eventually the convoy turned up, Ali stuck his waders on and stood in the new Miskin river declaring we should be able to get a 6 over game in.

To cut a long story short, after a bitter top or two Ali settled for team building exercises in the form of boule at the local pub.

A cracking evening was had by all with the cherry on the top being the now infamous Stirk splits (see the photos).

Friday the traditional tour end fixture against Whitchurch, and what a match. Sonning were definitely feeling the worse for wear and found themselves in the field first where a lacklustre performance meant we had to chase around 190 to win.

The Sonning reply was slow but steady after an initial mini collapse. Gary (62) and Baggers (86) put on a great stand to edge Sonning back to a position of potential but the run rate was still too slow. The next wicket brought Trout to the crease who immediately took a liking to the leg spin and launched a couple of sixes. Trout was eventually out for a quick fire 25, but the important thing was that the run rate required was now more than doable.

Unfortunately wickets now fell at regular intervals, ultimately leaving Ryan Pownall to face the final ball needing 1 to tie 2 to win - he was bowled and we lost by 1 run.

Awards for the Whitchurch game -

Man of the Match - Wildthang for his unbeaten ton (pints on tour)
Twat of the day - Snake
Gower Award - Smurf for collecting the boundary markers naked......

Roll on next year!
